Join the team at this very active fort, which boasts tunnels which are over 750m in length and 20m deep, for a ghost hunt. Come and join the team for a ghost hunting event in Chatham, Kent.
Fort Amherst is located in Chatham, Kent. Constructed in 1756 to defend London and the surrounding area from French invasion, Fort Amherst now serves as a tourist attraction, detailing its military history. There’s a labyrinth of tunnels constructed in the cliffs, that were designed to easily transport ammunition around the premises. This ensured all sides of the fortress were heavily fortified ready for any impending attacks by French soldiers, as the fortress was situated on the best route to London. During the Napoleonic wars, the fort’s defences were increased significantly, the workforce was mostly made up of prisoner's who were forced to carry out the work. According to English Heritage, the current fort stands as the finest example of a complete Napoleonic fortress in Britain today.
Some of these tunnels are over 750m in length and 20m deep. There are many rooms and dark passages leading from them.
Since its opening to the public in 1983, dark shadows are often seen, even in the daytime, and this has been reported almost daily. Voices have also been reported, often in people’s ears as if someone is standing right next to them.
People have heard the sounds of children crying and a woman wailing regularly. There also seems to be a very active presence in the tunnels that doesn’t seem to shy away from making themselves known. Visitors have also experienced a direct response to questions. Poltergeist activity is also known be experienced within the fort.
The are also reports of an apparition of a soldier has been witnessed by guests and staff in the lower gun floor. He tends to make himself known to people who are familiar with the location, only people who’ve worked there or visited a couple times have seen him. People also find that small, child-like, hand prints have been left on people's backs when leaving the tunnels.
Your ghost hunt at Fort Amherst includes:

An overnight ghost hunt at Fort Amherst is a very unique and terrifying experience and is certain to be an experience you will never forget.
Wow! What a night! Best investigation for me so far. Loads of activity going on everywhere, people getting affected all over the place and the spirit board producing some amazing and quite emotional results. So lucky we were given access to the unrestored parts of the fort, it made the atmosphere even more special. We had an amazing light show with the K2 meters from a Crimean nurse which was just stunning. My favourite parts? Talking with the little girl who managed to push the doll over. I had her name come through to me which was a first and then a lot of other stuff about her. Really pleased and just want to say thanks to the whole of the EGH group for such a brilliant night, you really look after us all. Can't wait for the next one!
First experience in doing anything like this, got on really well with everyone who I met there, also it was a night & experience I'll never forget & also plan to go on plenty more events, every single member of the team know what there doing had a fantastic sense if banter as well which made the whole night comfortable and easy through out, if there's anyone who's looking to do something like this go with these guys you won't find any better anywhere else Lee
Yet another fantastic ghost hunt with the team at Fort Amherst. Can't rate these guys highly enough, absolute professionals. Excellent in every way. Many thanks. See you again soon.
Thoroughly enjoyed my time at Fort Amherst. I went as part of a group of 4 and this is our second ghost hunt with Essex Ghost Hunters and can recommend them! They are a great group of guys and make you feel really safe. We had various things happen throughout the night, including tapping noises when we asked questions, balls moving, EMF readers lighting up and dousing rods moving when asked questions. We are looking forward to our next one at the Gunpowder Mills!
Guys you are all so professional and made sure we had a great evening. A big thank you. Well be booking another two events this year. Thank you
Only one word to describe last night EPIC, with more activity than you can shake a k2 at this fort almost trumps Harwich redoubt. I'm more naturally inclined to summer but Amherst is going to be one good reason why I can't wait for November. We'll be back for sure, thanks to the team for a really great evening, I wish seven hours at work would pass half as quickly.
This is the latest in our events with Essex Ghosthunters and it most definitely not a disappointment. The venue is soooo atmospheric and it is easy to immerse yourself in its history. So much went on I couldn't list it all. K-II meters flashing away (4 meters in the group and all flashed independently of one another), the REM Pod having a little dicky fit all by itself in the corner, a meter closing down indicating that the nurse spirit had gone, followed by the banging of the door a she left, shortly after the door banged again as she came back and the meter flashing away madly again, and so the night continued in the same vein. And I haven't even begun to describe being forced to my knees! People, if you have not booked an event with EGH then you really have no idea what you are missing. I strongly urge you to go straight to the Events page and book NOW!!
